Sir Richard Branson is staging an attempt to break the transatlantic sailing record. Branson has teamed up with Ben Ainslie and members of Team Origin.
The boat is a 99-ft super maxi called ‘Virgin Money’ and holds 24 crew. Two of the crew are Sir Richard’s children. The 30.6 ton vessel has a maximum speed of 45 knots. The 18-ft 15 ton canting keel and twin rudders. 4-hour watch cycles will allow very little sleep for the record seeking run. To break the record, the team needs to cross the Atlantic in under 6 days, 27 hours and 52 mins.
The weather is expected to be pretty rough. But these are the winds that will allow ‘Virgin Money’ to break the record.
“It’s going to be pretty unpleasant,” Richard Branson added. “I suspect most people will be thoroughly, thoroughly ill throughout most of the journey.”
Fair winds and following seas Sir Richard.
